In my experience they were a true description of the awful mush of tasteless food that this place somehow gets away with serving. It being Valentines night, we were, of course, prepared for inflated prices but not for inferior food! It was one of Malta vday ladies places where each course gradually got worse My partners wild boar was a chewy, tasteless mush. Both our plates went back, still piled with food but no comment from the staff.
The banoffee pie was a thin, insipid offering that looked as if it had come from a packet. I totally agree with the latter review Asheck, everything i had here was a disaster, so i do not want to dwell too much about this restaurant, eat here at your own perel. Asheck review is justifies. Have to say we were very disappointed with this restaurant considering the good reviews on here. We started for startersI had the octopus, was ok, but had much better octopus starter, small portion, half of the portion was chopped tomatoes in a small bowl.
Wife had garlic mushrooms. This is a simple dish to make. Mushrooms were thinly sliced, cooked till they were black, no taste of garlic at all. Much better if mushrooms left whole and not to cremate the mushrooms. Main meal; I had steak, with mushrooms sauce with brandy.
Steak was ok, not mouth watering, but Malta vday ladies sauce was not my liking, Not a nice taste which for me ruined the steak. Wife had some sort of home made beef stewwas so salty that my wife made a complaint and left half of it. My wife ordered a coffee cappuccino.
We always like this coffee, but my wife coulnt drink this, i tried it myself it tasted exactly when i sometimes have an expresso, If they cannot serve a simple coffe than i am afraid they have problems. I had a small bottle of wine which was served in a small sherry like glass!! I could see some guests had proper wine glasses, and some didn't, one should not have to ask for a proper wine glass, this should be normal.
To be honest the bottled water was the best thing we have had for an expensive meal. To be fair to the waitress she handled it well as she passed on the message to the chef, but we normally do not complain and we only complained about the salt in the stewbut overall the meal was a disaster. I was looking forward to trying Ta' Kris based on my partners experience a couple of years ago and the rave reviews online. It couldn't have been a bigger anti-climactic event, but worse than this was the terrible taste it left in our mouths which wasn't just down to the food!
I Malta vday ladies am struggling to fathom if we ate at the same restaurant given the reviews here - but we watched and saw everyone else be served the same slop and with the same attitude. I am not going to hold any punches here as I feel there needs to rebalancing of opinion here - this is not a good restaurant by any standard or a good reflection of Maltese cuisine as it was terrible from beginning to end and is clearly relying past reputation.
It started with the welcome or rather lack of! There was no warmth or friendliness, just a bark to ask if we had reservations, and when we said no, a surly retort of there is only the tables outside which is where we sat. Her manner and attitude stank and was not becoming of someone there to provide hospitality.
She frostily reeled off the specials and slapped down the menu before disappearing for some time.
I thought ok the hospitality isn't great but hoping the food will be truly amazing. It took sometime to be served and we noticed others who had ordered after us getting food before us. It started of with the bread basket - the bread was hard and stale and it was served up with cheap single portion margarine you get at a motorway service station, not even butter.
Our first course arrived - the delightfully sounding Deep-fried Gbejniet on a bed of salad. This was not nice at all - in both presentation and taste. It was covered some horribly acrid sweet and sour glaze and served on a Malta vday ladies of cheep soggy iceberg lettice and tomatoes saturated with vinegar.
The cheese itself was tasteless and low quality, we had some lovely Gbejnet we brought back with us and what was served was not a good reflection of this uniquely Maltese delicacy. Our mains came and similarly looked unappetising - I have had better looking food on a third-world airline, and that tasted better too! I was really looking forward to trying Rabbit for the first time, what came out was nothing short of grossly overcooked in a tasteless gravy that tasted of cheap red wine.
It looked like dog-food and didn't taste much better than I imagine something like that would. It was served with overcooked flavourless school dinner vegetables and a side of undercooked soggy potatoes. I think the fact they couldn't even cook roast-potatoes in an appetising manner shows the level of cooking on show is here. I tried my partners Lamb dish and that was similarly overcooked and chewy and with no flavour.
Most of our food was left untouched.
We wanted to have dessert when we first sat down but the experience was so appalling with service and low quality food meant we paid and left. This wasn't cheap either for Malta, and I don't want to re-iterate how bad this place is now. I luckily tried some of the Maltese delicacies like the Rabbit and Gbejniet elsewhere and it was delicious so I can assure this is not about a dislike Malta vday ladies Maltese cuisine but a genuine reflection of the appalling food and service on display here.
This place is trading on past glories, but what is so disheartening is how they treat the people who keep them in business with such disdain and contempt. It is rude and unacceptable. I would have given a zero rating if it was possible. I ate the rabbit dish which was a good portion.
Plenty of meat with a dark sauce and roast potatoes. It costed Dont be afraid to use your fingers. The service was quick efficient friendly and caring. It was busy but we didn't wait. It wasnt noisy although it is a small place. The hardest is to spot it from the street.
